Duct Spark Detector Alarm Extinguishing Dust Collector System
The duct spark detection and extinguishing system is an active safety device installed in pneumatic conveying ducts and dust collection pipelines. It continuously monitors the airstream for sparks, glowing embers, and incandescent particles generated by cutting, grinding, or material friction. When a spark is detected, the system responds within milliseconds — triggering an alarm, activating a high-pressure water spray to extinguish the ignition source, and optionally shutting down the fan or closing an isolation valve. This prevents the spark from reaching the baghouse or silo, where it could ignite accumulated combustible dust and cause a catastrophic explosion. Our system uses infrared and ultraviolet dual-spectrum detection to distinguish real sparks from ambient light, hot duct walls, and reflected dust. The probe is housed in a rugged, explosion-proof enclosure rated for Zone 21/22 hazardous areas. The controller features a touchscreen interface, self-diagnostic functions, and relay outputs for seamless integration with existing PLC and DCS systems. Complying with ATEX, NFPA 654, and NFPA 69 standards, this system is mandatory equipment for dust-handling facilities in woodworking, grain, feed, plastics, and metal processing.
Cutting, grinding, and conveying combustible materials routinely generate sparks and hot particles. These embers travel with the dust-laden airstream into the dust collector, where accumulated dust provides abundant fuel. By the time a spark reaches the filter bags, it is already inside the most dangerous part of the system. Without early detection and extinguishing, a single spark can trigger a primary explosion inside the collector, followed by a more destructive secondary explosion that propagates through the plant. Conventional after-the-fact safety devices — explosion vents, isolation valves — limit damage but do not prevent ignition. Facilities need active, source-level protection that stops the spark before it reaches the fuel.
Our system provides source-level protection. A dual-spectrum (IR + UV) sensor continuously monitors the duct cross-section, detecting sparks with a temperature above 800°C within milliseconds. The controller’s intelligent algorithm filters out false signals from lighting, welding, or hot walls. When a real spark is confirmed, the controller energizes a solenoid valve that fires a high-pressure water spray into the duct downstream of the detector, quenching the ember before it reaches the dust collector. The spray duration is adjustable, and the system automatically resets after the event, allowing production to continue. Optional air-purge ports on the detector lens prevent dust accumulation and reduce maintenance. The entire system is designed for continuous operation in high-dust, high-vibration industrial environments.

The detector probe is mounted on the duct wall, with its optical window facing the airstream. It continuously monitors the infrared and ultraviolet radiation emitted by hot particles. When a spark passes through the field of view, the sensor generates a signal. The controller compares this signal against its algorithm to confirm a real hazard. Upon confirmation, the controller sends a signal to the solenoid valve of the water spray assembly, which is mounted downstream. A high-pressure water spray is injected into the duct, creating a fine mist that cools and extinguishes the ember. The controller simultaneously activates the alarm and, if configured, sends a shutdown signal to the fan or conveyor. After the event, the system resets automatically.
