What Is Condensation, and What Is Bag Blinding?

Condensation is a moisture problem. When wet flue gas meets a cold bag or wall, water vapor condenses into droplets that wet the filter media. It starts when the housing leaks air, has no insulation, or runs below the dew point, and it is the usual trigger for blinding.

Bag blinding is a dust blocking problem. Wet or sticky dust mixes with condensate and forms a hard, mud-like crust on the bag surface that seals the filter pores, so the bag stops breathing. In short, condensation creates water, and blinding is dust caking in that water. They are linked, but they are not the same failure.

How to Tell Condensation and Blinding Apart

With condensation you can see water droplets on the housing, bags and hopper walls, and the bags feel wet and soft. Differential pressure climbs slowly, and pulse cleaning still works.

With blinding, the bag surface shows a hard gray shell and dust is embedded inside the fabric. Differential pressure spikes sharply, normal pulse cleaning has no effect, airflow drops and capture points lose suction. Blinding then follows when that water mixes with dust, but it can also start alone from sticky, hygroscopic dust, weak pulse pressure, uneven nozzle airflow, or a bag that fits too tightly over its cage.

How to Fix Condensation

  • First remove the moisture. Seal leaking doors, flanges and discharge valves, and replace aged gaskets.
  • Add insulation to the shell and ducts to shrink the temperature gap.
  • Follow a strict start-stop routine: preheat before startup, and keep the fan running after shutdown until wet gas is purged.
  • Drain the air tank and service the compressed air dryer so pulse air stays dry.
  • For light condensation, run the unit empty until the inside is dry.

How to Fix Bag Blinding

  • Light blinding can be cured by offline blowing with dry compressed air, opening the housing to ventilate, and restoring permeability.
  • For moderate caking, remove the hardened crust, tune the cleaning settings and shorten pulse intervals so dust cannot re-pack.
  • Severe blinding that has hardened, turned black or become brittle cannot be repaired: replace the bags, and clean the wet, caked dust out of the hopper and ducts before restarting.

How to Prevent Both Failures

  • Keep gas temperature well above the dew point during normal running.
  • Hold air leakage below three percent with good welding and tight seals.
  • Insulate and heat the housing in cold climates.

  • Maintain the pulse system and dry air supply so the bags can always clean themselves.
  • Check the discharge valves and hopper regularly so wet cake cannot build up inside.
